Shaped by the Truth of Who God Is
Identifying Encounters That Deepen Conviction
Much of Western culture holds that truth is relative—that personal experience defines reality and that what
is “true for you” may differ from what is “true for me.” While our perception of truth is indeed limited by
our own perspective and understanding, truth itself is not relative. God alone is the source of all truth, and
what He reveals about Himself is steady and sure, no matter how much our world or feelings change.
The names of God in the Bible are not human labels but divine revelations. They express something real and
enduring about who He is—His faithfulness, His power, His mercy, His presence. As we come to know His
names, we’re reminded that God doesn’t shift with culture or opinion. He is the same yesterday, today, and
forever—and His names draw us deeper into that unchanging reality.
Objectives:
- Identify personal encounters where specific names of God have shaped your story, as well as wrestle with names that feel distant and detached.
- Ground a disciple in God’s truth regardless of how we might feel at a given moment.
- Deepen intimacy with God by growing a personal “thesaurus” — an ever-increasing collection of personal experiences with God’s character.
The names of God can expand your understanding and experience of who He is. Each name reveals a different facet of His character and invites you into a more personal relationship with Him.
As you read the Scripture passages in the coming weeks, reflect on how God revealed Himself to His people in the past—and how He has revealed Himself in your own life. Keep a daily journal as a way to trace God’s
fingerprints through your story. Your journal is not simply a record of answers—it’s a space for discovery,
honesty, and worship. Write down your responses to any of the questions below, and allow room for whatever else the Holy Spirit brings to mind. Some entries may be brief; others may take pages. Let the process be organic.
- Which names feel familiar, comforting, or reassuring?
- Which names surprise you, challenge you, or expand your view of God?
- Are there names that feel distant, difficult to believe, or that you wrestle with? Why might that be?
- What names of God can you attach to personal encounters and experiences—past or present?
- How might God be inviting you to know Him by a new name in this season of life?
Over time, your journal will become a personal testimony of how the living God revealed Himself to you by name. Consider sharing particular insights with others.
